Following yesterday’s performance at the pivotal California Primary press conference sponsored by Secretary of State Dr. Drew Halfmann, many throughout the state have begun to reassess Senator Edwards viability in the upcoming California primary. Members of the press were questioned Senators Edwards, Clinton, and Obama on everything from video games to economic policy. When questioned by many major media outlets during the news conference, Senator Edwards came across as very articulate, confident, and detailed in his responses. These seemed in sharp contrast to the coarse manner in which Senator Clinton responded to her questions about video games and voting decisions regarding the Iraq War, in addition to a response that suggested President Bush fear losing his life when leaving office.
When asked how he would fix the economy, Senator Edwards responded with a very detailed plan centering about the Rural Recovery Act he offered in Senate, as well as the importance of education in an increasingly global economy. Senator Edwards was also asked if he benefitted from the very visible verbal conflict between Senators Obama and Clinton during the South Carolina debates. While the two “celebrity candidates” were busy amongst each other, Senator Edwards diverted from their approach and certainly appeared to be the most statesmanlike. When asked about this, he refused to proclaim victory from the debate and instead diplomatically stated the need to stick together as a party.
Senator Edwards could easily have said he emerged as the victor and was clearly the most professional amongst the three Democratic candidates, but he recognizes the need to unite the Democratic Party instead of a further divide. This is further evidence that Senator Edwards would rather spend time and effort coming up with plans on moving our country forward instead of engaging in the mudslinging seen in other camps.
